Anupam Tripathi is a well-known Indian actor based in South Korea. He has appeared in various South Korean television series, including Hospital Playlist (2020-21). His film’s credits include Space Sweepers (2021), The 8th Night (2021), Strangers From Hell (2019), and Miss and Mrs. Cops (2019).

He performed his first major role as Ali Abdul in Netflix’s South Korean survival drama series, Squid Game (2021) received worldwide recognition and popularity. He was born into a middle-class family in New Delhi, India, and began training in singing and acting in 2006. His interest in acting increased after performing a slave in a stage production of Spartacus.

From 2006 to 2010, he performed his part in the playwright Shahid Anwar’s Behroop theater group. Also in 2010, he tried to attend the National School of Drama in New Delhi. However, he shifted to South Korea to attend the Korean National University of Arts on the Arts Major Asian scholarship.

He has discussed the basic difficulty of improving to the cultural and language differences. But then he became fluent in Korean in less than two years. He began his acting career in Korean plays and commercials during his third year at University.

Anupam Tripathi’s first feature film credit was as an unnamed Sri Lankan man in Ode to My Father (2014). He had various minor unnamed roles in television series like Rain or Shine (2017), and films such as Asura: The City of Madness (2015). Many of his roles relate to being a traveling worker in Korean society.

Netflix’s original series Squid Game’s director Hwang Dong-hyuk said that it was “hard to find good foreign actors in Korea” and that he cast Tripathi because of his emotional acting skills and fluency in Korean. The series was an international success. Tripathi’s follower count on Instagram rose from 10k to over 2.5 million in a matter of days. But he has now 3.8m followers on his Instagram account.

Anupam Tripathi’s father died in 2017. He is currently completing his master’s degree in acting at the Korea National University of Arts.
