Bai Ling is a quite famous Chinese-American actress. She is best known for her work in the films The Crow (1994), Nixon (1995), Red Corner (1997), Crank: High Voltage (2009), Dumplings (2004), as well as TV shows Entourage (2005) and Lost (2007). Notably, she won the Best Supporting Actress awards at the 2004 Hong Kong Film Awards and the 2004 Golden Horse Awards for her role in Dumplings.

Career

Bai Ling has one older sister named Bai Jie and a younger brother, Bai Chen. She has described herself as a very shy child who found that she best showed herself through acting and performing. During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). She learned how to perform by taking part in eight model plays at her elementary school shows.

In 1978, after graduating from high school, she passed the People’s Liberation Army’s exams and became an artist soldier. Her primary activity there was entertaining in the musical theater. She also served temporarily as an Army nurse. She later stated that during her time in Tibet, the older officers used her and other female performers with alcohol and sexually abused them, including one reason of rape that led to a pregnancy she aborted.

Bai Ling mentions this period of sexual abuse for her following struggles with alcohol addiction. Afterward, she spent some time in a mental hospital. Shortly after her release from the hospital in 1981, she enlisted the People’s Art Theater of Chengdu and became a professional actress.

Her performance as a young man in the stage plays Little Tiger got the attention of movie director Teng Wenji, which gained her first movie role in On the Beach (1985).

In later years, she appeared in several movies including Call Me King (2015), Maximum Impact (2017), Exorcism at 60,000 Feet (2019), The Legion (2020), and Venus as a Boy (2021). She temporarily moved to New York in 1991 to study the film department at New York University. But later got a special visa that allowed her to stay in the United States until she became a U.S. citizen in 1999.
