Jenifer Lewis is a renowned American actress, singer, comedian, and activist. She is best known for playing the roles of mothers in several films, including The Preacher’s Wife (1996), Think Like a Man (2012), and in the sequel Think Like a Man Too (2014), and many more. She is best recognized for her role in the miniseries of The Temptations (1998).
Career
Jenifer Lewis began her career appearing in Broadway musicals and worked as a backup singer for Bette Midler in the 90s. After that, she appeared in films Beaches (1988) and Sister Act (1992). She landed the role of Effie White in Michael Bennett’s musical Dreamgirls, but when the show moved to Broadway, Bennett chose Jennifer Holliday for the role.
Lewis is also well-known as The Mother of Black Hollywood, given her many matriarchal film and television roles. On November 14, 2017, she published a memoir of the same name “The Mother of Black Hollywood”.
She voiced Mama Odie in Disney’s animated feature The Princess and the Frog (2009), and Flo in Pixar’s Cars series. Her other film roles include Dead Presidents (1995), Cast Away (2000), and Hereafter (2010).
On television, Jenifer Lewis starred as Lana Hawkins in the medical drama Strong Medicine from 2000 to 2006. She also had recurring roles in sitcoms A Different World (1990–93), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1991–96), and Girlfriends (2002–06).
In 2014, Lewis began starring as Ruby Johnson in Kenya Barris’s comedy series Black-ish, for which she received two Critics’ Choice Television Award nominations. She now appears in the sitcom series Grown-ish (2022) a spin-off of the series Black-ish.
She shared the cover of her upcoming book entitled Walking in My Joy and will publish it on August 30, 2022. Lewis voices the recurring role of Patty in the animated television series The Ghost and Molly McGee (2021-present). She received the nominations for Black Reel Awards and NAACP Image Award for her performance in Five (2011).
Lewis appeared in the music video of Todrick Hall’s third solo album Forbidden as a nosy neighbor in 2018. In 1996, she appeared in Erykah Badu’s song On & On as Eyrkah’s Mother.
