8 Things You Didn’t Know About Liza Minelli

1. Named After a Song

On March 12, 1946, “Judy Garland” and “Vincente Minnelli” welcomed their first and only child, Liza Minnelli. They named her after the song “Liza (All The Clouds’ll Roll Away),” written by “George” and “Ira” Gershwin with “Gus Kahn” in 1929 for the Ziegfeld production “Show Girl.”

2. Film Debut at Age 3

Minnelli had already appeared on screen before she was born (Garland was pregnant with her while filming 1946’s Till the Clouds Roll By). But she made her official film debut at the age of three in 1949’s In the Good Old Summertime, playing the daughter of Garland’s character, Veronica. [1]

3. Voiced “Dorothy” in Journey Back to Oz

In “Journey Back to Oz,” Minnelli continued her mother’s legacy by giving “Dorothy” a voice. The majority of the cast, including a 15-year-old Minnelli, had recorded their lines in 1962, but the film’s production was delayed, and it didn’t come out until 1974.

4. Had Severe Brain Inflammation

After being hospitalized in 2000 for severe brain inflammation, Minnelli was told she would never walk or talk again. Undaunted, she immediately began practicing the alphabet and rehearsed herself back to health with a regular singing and dancing routine.

5. Controversy

Minnelli’s former bodyguard, “M’Hammed Soumayah,” sued her for assault and abuse, breach of contract, and sexual harassment. She countersues, saying that he violated his confidentiality agreement at work. In November 2009, the matter was resolved out of court, and the specifics of the agreement were kept confidential.

6. Charity Worker

Throughout her life, she has volunteered for a variety of charities and causes. She served on the “IAHP board of directors” for 20 years and is also involved with “amfAR”.[2]

7. Famous Parents

Even Hollywood’s most famous children can’t compete with Liza’s pedigree. She is the child of  “Judy Garland”, the legendary actress, and singer, and her father was “Vincente Minnelli”, the director of musicals. In other words, Liza appeared to have had it made from the moment she was born.

Liza is one of the several celebrities who have won all the four awards “Emmy”, “Grammy”, “Oscar”, and “Tony”.
