Sanoe Lake is a renowned American actress, model, and surfer. She grew up in Kauai, Hawaii, and is of Hawaiian, Japanese, and English origin. Her name Sanoe means The Mist of the Mountains.

She was a known tomboy and thrill-seeker when she was growing up, earning herself the nickname “Sanoe boy.” During her teenage years, she suffered competitively. At thirteen, she moved from Kauai to the island of Oahu to attend high school. A manager on the beach of Oahu North Shore discovered her when she was fifteen years old when she came in from surfing.

Soon after she began modeling internationally. She had a successful career working as a professional model outside of the action sports industry. However, she became disappointed with the modeling industry, stating that it often felt “shallow and empty.”

Lake was the face of the brand Roxy. The New York fashion photographer Dewey Nicks shot early Roxy campaigns that featured Sanoe. The campaigns are credited for helping to create a new genre within the surfing industry for females by expanding their representation outside of competitive surfing.

Career

Sanoe Lake was one of the first female surfers to come out of the surfing industry and cross over into mainstream media. She earned the name “Princess of Surf” throughout the surfing industry because of her multi-level career. She was featured on the cover of dozens of magazines and in various commercials worldwide.

They featured some of the television commercial campaigns Lake in were Target, Mastercard, Gap, Volkswagen, Eddie Bauer, and MTV. Some magazines featured her in Elle, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, People, Shape, and Teen magazine. She published the book, Surfer Girl.

Lake starred in the Jam & Spoon music videos Stella (1999 version) and Lenny Kravitz’s If I Could Fall in Love (2003). She received nominations for an MTV Movie Award for her role in the film Blue Crush (2002) along with actresses Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez. She became part of the cast for the film Cruel World (2005) and Rain in Rolling in 2007.

Sanoe Lake starred as Gina in the 2008 film The Darkness alongside Devon Sawa and played the lead role in the 2008 film Half-Life as Pamela. The film received critical praise when it premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and won the Gen Art Acura Grand Jury Prize 2008.

It also received the Asian American International Film Festival Best Feature Film Award, the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival Best Narrative Feature Award. As well as the Visionary Award at Calgary’s Fairy Tales International. The film also received nominations for the Tokyo Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
