Why does Mariah Carey touch her ear?

While performing on the stage, singers often touch one ear. Because they are wearing an earpiece that plays a pre-recorded track. Mariah pushes the earpiece in or holds it in so that she can listen to the pre-recorded track as she sings and blocks out the outside noise. Obviously, only one ear because they need the other ear to hear their own voice.
