Maryam Nawaz Sharif, born on 28th October 1973. She is also known as Maryam Safdar. Maryam is a Pakistani politician and a daughter of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif. Initially, she was involved in some family charitable organizations. In 2012, she joined politics and was appointed as the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme in 2013. However, Maryam Nawaz resigned in 2014 as her appointment was challenged in the Lahore High Court. In July 2018, she was prisoned in Jail for seven years with £2 million fine on corruption charges in the Avenfield reference case. On 19 September, the Islamabad High Court suspended her sentence.
Prior to this, she was involved in some family’s charity organizations. She served as the Chairperson of Sharif Trust, Sharif Medical City, and Sharif Educational Institutes.
In November 2011, her paternal uncle, Shehbaz Sharif permitted her to join politics after she expressed her interest to take part in politics. During her political career, she visited various educational institutes and delivered speeches mainly on education and women’s rights.
In 2012, she joined politics and was appointed as the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme in 2013. In 2014, she then left the post as she was found in corruption cases. For seven years, she was in jail with £2 million fine on corruption charges in the Avenfield reference case.
In 2017, Maryam Nawaz became one of the BBC’s 100 Women. In Dec 2017, she was featured on ‘The New York Times’ list of 11 Powerful Women Around the World for the year 2017. It was the time when she was so active in her political career after her father Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the SC of Pakistan because of the Panama Papers Case. However, there are so many controversies sparked after joining her political career.
In 2019, Maryam Nawaz was taken in the custody by National Accountability Bureau Lahore over Chaudhry Sugar Mills corruption charges. Later in the same year, she was released on bail by LHC.
Maryam Nawaz is regarded as one of the most prominent members. She campaigned for her mother, Kulsoom Nawaz, during the by-elections in Constituency NA-120.
