8 Things You Didn’t Know About Mohammed Amer
1. Confusion In His Identity
Mo confesses that his high school years were difficult. According to NPR, the comedian was caught between Latino and Black gangs. Because, although the Latinos wanted to recruit him thinking he was one of them, the blacks couldn’t bear him because he looked Mexican. [1]
2. Effect Of 9/11 Attack On His Career
Mo had already established himself as a comic by 1999, and by 2000, he had become the first Arab-American comedian to travel the world performing for troops. Unfortunately, the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred, leading his family to assume his career was ended. But Mo believed it would spur him forward.
3. Always Wanted To Be A Performer
Mo has little recollection of his upbringing, but his five siblings remember his attempting to win their attention. Mo used to turn off the TV and tell his family members to watch him instead when he was a kid. It’s no surprise, then, that he naturally gravitated toward comedy.
4. Thought Education Was Unnecessary After His Father’s Death
Mo believed that schooling was unnecessary after his father died, so instead of attending lessons, he would slip out to watch baseball. However, his teacher advised him to consider how his father would feel if Mo did not graduate.
5. His First Stand-Up Comedy Role
To motivate him even more, his teacher urged him to learn a Shakespeare monologue for a passing grade, and then he would get to perform in front of his classmates. Having a genuine audience for the first time meant everything to Mo, and he still gets emotional when talking about how Mrs. Broderick set him on the correct track.
6. Thinks Her Mother Is A Gangster
Mo kept referring to his mother as a gangster when he spoke to Aljazeera America. Because he had witnessed personally what she was capable of doing to protect her children. Mo’s mother chose to smuggle the money she had accumulated for years when they departed Kuwait. [2]
7. Got A Chance To Work On HBO And Netflix
After struggling to get his special recorded in Austin, the comedian’s opportunities began to open. HBO offered him the opportunity to air the special on their network, but Netflix beat him to it. It was a dream come true for Mo to have his art seen in over 130 countries and reach millions of people. As a result, choosing Netflix over HBO made sense.
8. His Work Promotes Art & Understanding Among Cultures
Amer’s work encourages art and understanding across the world’s many cultures, and his ethnic and family heritage positions him to speak about religious, terror, and contemporary political issues via the prism of personal stories about his family and himself.
