Robert Tapert is a renowned American film and television producer, writer, and director. He is best known for co-creating the television series Xena: Warrior Princess (1995). He is also the co-founder of the film production companies, Renaissance Pictures (1979) and Ghost House Pictures in 2002.
Tapert has two sisters named Dorothy and Mary Beth Tapert and a younger brother named Jeff Tapert. He first became involved with filmmaking while studying at Michigan State University, where he was studying economics.
The director Sam Raimi and Tapert experimented on many short films before aspiring on their first feature-length picture, a graphic horror film titled The Evil Dead (1981) which Tapert produced and Raimi directed.
Career
Horror author Stephen King gave an excellent review of the film. The film was a success with the crowd at the Cannes Film Festival in France. However, the film was not a favorite of critics; they badly acclaimed it as a horror classic in later years, eventually gaining a cult following.
The film was successful enough to create two sequels, Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992), a remake in 2013, and a television series titled Ash vs Evil Dead (2015). Tapert continued on to produce many other films, with Raimi and Campbell including Crimewave (1985), Easy Wheels (1989), Darkman (1990), and many more.
He co-produced many films with Ghost House Pictures and their first release, The Grudge (2004) grossed nearly $200 million internationally. They followed up that success with The Messengers (2007), 30 Days of Night (2002), Drag Me to Hell (2009) which Raimi directed, and The Possession (2012).
Robert Tapert would re-collaborate with director Fede Álvarez and writer Rodo Sayagues on the breakout film Don’t Breathe (2016) that grossed $157 million worldwide. He also co-produced and wrote television series including Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (TV series, 1995-1999), M.A.N.T.I.S. (TV series, 1994), Spy Game (TV series, 1997), and American Gothic (TV series, 1995-1998).
