Sean Patrick Thomas is an American actor. He is best known for his role in several films, including Save the Last Dance (2001), Barbershop (2002), Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004), and Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016). He is also best known for his role in television series, including The District (TV series, 2000) and Vixen (TV series, 2015–2016).
Thomas grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of Cheryl, a financial analyst for DuPont, and Carlton Thomas, an engineer who also served for DuPont. He graduated from Brandywine High School and attended the University of Virginia and has two younger siblings.
He originally planned to study law, but upon successfully auditioning for a role in Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun. Thomas changed directions and attended New York University’s prominent Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1995.
Sean Patrick Thomas began appearing in screen roles in the mid-1990s. He had minor roles in several films, including Courage Under Fire (1996), Picture Perfect (1997), Can’t Hardly Wait (1998), and Cruel Intentions (1999). Also in 1997, he appeared as Surveillance Operator in the action film Conspiracy Theory. In 1999, he played Darren in the drama film The Sterling Chase.
His first leading role was in the teen romance Save the Last Dance (2001), in which he starred as Derek opposite Julia Stiles. The film became successful among teen audiences, grossing over $90 million domestically.
Subsequently, Thomas appeared in supporting roles in the 2002 films Barbershop and Halloween: Resurrection. He joined the cast as a member on The District (2000–2004), a television crime drama that aired on CBS. He later played a recurring role as Alan Townsend on Reaper in 2009.
Sean Patrick Thomas found the recurring character of Karl Dupree on Lie to Me in 2009. In 2012, he worked with Ioan Gruffudd and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Ringer, where he played Solomon Vessida. He landed the role of Cyborg for Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015), replacing Shemar Moore from Justice League: War (2014 ), who was originally not available to reprise his role.
