Sharon Leal is an American actress and singer. She is best known for her roles in movies, including Dreamgirls (2006), This Christmas (2007), Why Did I Get Married? (2007), Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010). She is also best known for her roles on the television show Legacy from 1998 to 1999.

Her mother, Angelita, is Filipina and her father was an African American military police officer who broke up with her mother before Sharon was born. Soon after, her mother tied the knot with Jesse Leal, a Master Sergeant in the US Air Force and a police officer at Clark Air Base, Philippines. He legitimately adopted Sharon.

Career

Sharon Leal began her acting career with the role of Dahlia Crede in the CBS daytime soap opera television serial Guiding Light (1952). Later, she enlisted in the Broadway company of Rent. Soon after, she joined the cast as Mimi for the San Francisco leg of the first national tour of Rent.

She also appeared on the 1999 creative cast recording of the Off-Broadway rock musical Bright Lights, Big City, alongside Patrick Wilson and Jesse L. Martin. Leal starred in the Fox prime-time TV series Boston Public from 2000 to 2004.

She also appeared in a recurring role in the short-lived series LAX (2004), as the wife of airport co-director Roger de Souza. She also co-starred in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls in 2006 as Michelle Morris. Jennifer Hudson plays the fictional character of Effie White in the pop group The Dreams, with Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Foxx.

Sharon Leal also starred in This Christmas and in the Tyler Perry production Why Did I Get Married? (both in 2007). She played the character Vanessa Lodge in the series Hellcats (TV series) until it got canceled in 2011. She later played the supporting role in the movie 1982, which is a story of a drug-addicted mother and a father’s struggle to protect his daughter.
