Sonia Gandhi is an Indian politician. Her party, the Indian National Congress, has ruled India for most of its post-independence history. After serving for twenty-two years as party leader, she took over in 1998, seven years after the murder of Rajiv Gandhi, her husband, and a former Prime Minister of India. She returned to the post in 2019 after her son, Rahul Gandhi, resigned.
Career
She became involved in Indian public life after the assassination of her mother-in-law and the election of her husband as prime minister. She acted as the prime minister’s hostess and accompanied him on a number of state visits.
She actively campaigned against her husband’s sister-in-law Maneka Gandhi, who was running against Rajiv in Amethi in 1984. The Bofors scandal broke out at the end of Rajiv Gandhi’s five years in office. It was reported that Ottavio Quattrocchi, an Italian businessman believed to be involved, was close to Sonia Gandhi, having access to the Prime Minister’s official residence.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has alleged that Sonia Gandhi appeared on the voters’ list in New Delhi before getting Indian citizenship in April 1983.
She, however, made her broad career in the field of politics and has faced controversies as well. But she is still remembered for her work and contribution to society.
