Babra Sharif is a fair-haired, attractive and talented Pakistani film actress. She was born on 10th December 1954 in Syedwala, Pakistan. She belongs to a middle-class family. She had a keen interest in Show business from her early childhood. Therefore, Sharif started her modeling career at the age of eleven. Up to date, she has worked in more than 100 movies. Now a day she is the honor of her Jewelry shop in Karachi.

Career Journey

She made her first debut on screen in 1973 and played in a ‘Jet’ washing powder commercial. After this commercial, she named as “Jet’ powder girl”.

She also made her acting debut in Mohsin Shirazi’s television drama “Kiran Kahani”, which was aired from Karachi television station and also in the PTV. The drama is based on a classical slapstick comedy which was written by Haseena Moin, directed by Shirin Khan and stirred with Roohi Bano, Manzoor Qureshi, Jamshed Ansari in the main cast. In 1992, after a long break, she came back to TV and gave an outstanding performance in the Anwar Maqsood’s PTV comedy-drama “Nadan Nadia”.

She made her film debut in 1974, Sharif signed for two films at the same time. Her first film was Shamim Ara’s ”Bhool” which was directed by S. Sulaiman. Her second film as a supporting character was S. Sulaiman’s “Intezaar”. However, Intizaar was released first than Bhool. Sharif debuted in the third film “Shama” which was directed by Nazar Shabab, with the co-artist Waheed Murad, Deeba, Mohammad Ali and Nadeem. The film was seemed to be a golden jubilee.

Despite her acting in the films, Sharif has also worked in movies. Hence, she appeared as supporting actress, in a 1975 film “Mera Naa Patay Khan” which was directed by Masood Pervez with the co-artist Neelo and Shahid who played the lead cast. She also worked in the Pakistani cinema. She acted in Iqbal Kashmiri’s film “Shareef Budmaash”. Ali Sufyan Aafaqi’s film “Ajnabi”, and Nazar Shabab’s film “Naukar”. After these acts in the cinema, people knew her worth in the Pakistan entertainment industry.

After she rose to prominence in her career, she played in another film “Masoom”, as the lead role opposite Ghulam Mohyedin, which was directed by Wazeer Ali. In 1975, she acted in the super hit film Mera Naam Hai Mohabbat, which was directed by Shabab Kiranvi. Her memorable performance earned her huge critical acclaimed and garnered her Special Award from Nigar Awards. After this major success, she next stepped into the five releases in 1976, including Pervez Malik’s film “Talaash”, Shabab Kiranvi’s film “Dewar”, Ali Sufyan Aafaqi’s film “Aag Aur Aansoo”, Aslam Daar’s film “Zubeida”. During her career journey of this golden period, her most successful films were Zafar Shabab’s directed film “Shabana”, This film got huge success by the audience and completed its golden jubilee, by winning Best Actress award from Nigar Awards, not only just by Sharif, but also by Waheed Murad and Shahid. Sharif. After her great success in this decade, Sharif continued her acting in Zafar Shabab’s film “Waqt” alongside Waheed Murad, Kavita and Shamim Ara. On the next year, she also played the lead character in 1977 film “Aashi”

When sharif popularity came into being in the last decade, she became one of the well-known personalities of the 1980 decade. Next Sharif appeared in Iqbal Akhtar’s film “Chotay Nawab” in 1980. Her famous 1981 released was the film “Dil Nay Phir Yaad kya” opposite with Waheed Murad

Sharif first release of 1982, was the film “Sangdil”. Now sharif performed more passionately and her performance was highly acclaimed by people. Hence, she again receives her second Best Actress award from Nigar Awards. Sharif acted in the number of hit films during this decade.

Her outstanding acting in the film “Miss Colombo”, released in 1984 and “Miss Bangkok”, released in 1986 again earned her two Best Actress award by Nigar Awards, one for each.

Following the years, in the late 1980s, Sharif won three Best Actress award by Nigar Awards for her more challenging roles in the film “Duniya, Kundan” which was released in the year 1987, ”Mukhra” which was released in 1988  and “Gori Deyaan Jhan Jharan” (1990). Therefore, she gained critical praise from her fans.

The success of Sharif stepped to the next decade, and from 1990 to 2000, she was not active as previous. In the mid-1990s, she released some hit films. Some of her remarkable performance in this decade were, 1995 film “Ham Nahin Ya Tum Nahin” was a box-office hit film, Piyasa Sawan and Dostana. However, the 1996 film “Sajawa”l was also a huge success film. and after this film, she did not more films. “Ghayal” was the Sharif’s last film which was opposite to Izhar Qazi, and directed by Hasnain. It was Sharif’s last film of this decade and her life which was released in 1997. After that, she decided to quit the film industry.

Sharif was the recipient of the Nigar Awards eight times during her film career.

  • Special Award from Nigar Awards for her acting performance in the film Mera Naam Hai Mohabbat in 1975.
  • Nigar Award for best actress in the Urdu film Shabana in 1976.
  • Nigar Award for best actress in the Urdu film Sangdil in 1982.
  • Nigar Award for best actress in the Urdu film Miss Colombo in 1984.

  • Nigar Award for best actress in the Urdu film Kundan in 1987.
  • Nigar Award for best actress in the Punjabi film Mukhra in 1988.
  • Nigar Award for best actress in the Punjabi film Gori Deyaan Jhan Jharan in 1990.
  • Sharif is the winner of the LUX Icon of Beauty Award by Lux Style Awards held in 2003 in Karachi.
