Florence Pugh (born in Oxford on January 3, 1996) is an Oxford-born British actress who made her debut in the 2014 feature film “Autumn”. In 2016, Pugh won an award for playing a young aggressive girl in the independent drama Lady Macbeth, winner of the British Independent Film Awards.
She was nominated for Oscars and British Film Academy Awards. She won the Chopin Trophy at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. She also, appeared in the superhero movie Marvel Cinematic Universe “Black Widow” in 2021, as Elena Bellova.
Florence Pugh Early Life
As the daughter of restaurant owner Clinton Pugh and dancer Deborah Pugh, she has three siblings: actor and musician Toby Sebastian, actress Arabella Gibbins and Raphael La “Lafite” Pugh. As a child, she suffered from tracheomalacia, which led to frequent hospitalizations.
When Pugh was three years old, the family moved to Sotogrande, Spain, hoping that warmer weather would improve his health. They lived there until they were six years old and then moved. Also at the age of 6, Pugh played Mary in a school drama, and she spoke with a Yorkshire accent. She received her private education at Wedgwood School and St. Edward’s School in Oxford, but she did not like the school’s failure to support her acting ambitions.
Florence Pugh Career
When she was still in the sixth grade, Pugh made her debut in the 2014 TV series “Autumn”, in which she played a precocious girl with Maisie Williams. In the same year, the actress was nominated as Best British Newcomer and British/Irish Young Artist of the Year by the London Film Critics Association at the BFI London Film Festival.
Pugh starred in three major films in 2019 and was recognized for her breakthrough internationally. She played the role of professional wrestler Peppa in the comedy “Fighting with Family” for the first time, telling about Peppa’s career. The film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim.
In her last film of the year, Pugh played the fickle artist Amy March in “Little Women”, which is based on Louise May Alcott’s namesake Adapted from the novel, directed by Greta Gerwig.
Pugh plays the spy Elena Belova in the superhero movie “Black Widow” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was released in July 2021 and received positive reviews from film critics, who noted the actress’s outstanding performance. She will repeat her role in the Disney + superhero series Hawkeye and star in the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling.
