The great Lata Mangeshkar passed away on 6 February 2022, due to multiple organ failure after contracting COVID-19. She passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of her melodious voice and songs. She was hospitalized at a hospital in Mumbai.

Mangeshkar had an extraordinary career spanning over half a century, singing more than 30,000 songs across 36 languages.

But it was her work in Bollywood, India’s Hindi film industry, that made her a national icon.

The Indian government has announced two days of mourning from Sunday, during which the national flag would be flown at half-mast throughout the country.

Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929 to a Marathi father and a Gujarati mother in the city of Indore. She is an Indian playback singer, vocalist, and music director. Lata is one of the best-known and most regarded playback singers in India. Her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical traditional singer and theatre actor. Her mother, Shevanti, a Gujarati woman from Thalner, Bombay Presidency. She has recorded songs in over a thousand Hindi movies and has sung songs in more than thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, though basically in Marathi, Hindi, and Bengali.

Lata Mangeshkar moved to Mumbai in 1945. She started taking lessons in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan of Bhendibazaar Gharana. She sang “Paa Lagoon Kar Jori” for Vasant Joglekar’s Hindi-language movie Aap Ki Seva Mein(1946). Music director Ghulam Haider mentored and guided her as a singer vocalist. He acquainted Mangeshkar to producer Sashadhar Mukherjee, who was working then on the film Shaheed (1948)

Mangeshkar sang numerous raga-based songs for Naushad in movies such as Deedar (1951), Baiju Bawra (1952), Amar(1954), Uran Khatola (1955) and Mother India (1957). From the 1970s onwards, Lata Mangeshkar has additionally arranged many concerts in India and abroad, including a few philanthropy charity concerts. Her first show overseas was at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1974 and was the first Indian to do as such. She likewise released an album of Mirabai’s bhajans, “Chala Vaahi Des”, composed by her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

In the 1978 Raj Kapoor directed Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Lata Mangeshkar lends her voice to the fundamental theme song “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”, which was among the graph-toppers of the year. In 1974, The Guinness Book of Records recorded Lata Mangeshkar as the most listed artist in the history, stating that she had apparently recorded “not less than 25,000 solo, duet, and chorus-backed songs in 20 Indian languages” in the range of 1948 and 1974.

In 2001, Lata Mangeshkar was awarded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Around the same year, she built up the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, managed by the Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation (founded by the Mangeshkar family in October 1989). In 2005, she designed a jewelry collection called Swaranjali, which was created by Adora, an Indian diamond export company. Five pieces from the collection raised £105,000 at a Christie’s auction, and a portion of the money was donated for the 2005 Kashmir earthquake relief. Likewise in 2001, she recorded her first Hindi song with the writer Ilaiyaraaja, for the film Lajja. Lata had earlier recorded Tamil and Telugu songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja.

She is the recipient of three National Film Awards, 12 Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, two Filmfare Special Awards, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and some more.

• The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was bestowed on her in 1989 by the Government of India.
• In 2001, in acknowledgment of her achievements to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor and is only the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this honor.
