One of the most acclaimed, Indian veteran ghazal singers, Pankaj Udhas has established himself as the best singer, worked as a playback singer for the Bollywood film industry, and dropped various music albums. He is from Gujrat, India, and most popularly known for his amazing, melodious voice as he has sung a number of ghazals that touch the millions of hearts across the world. Like every star, he has some darker side of life and after facing hardships, he finally became popular globally.

He was born on 17th May 1951, Jetpur, Saurashtra, India, grew up with a brother, Nirmal Udhas, Manhar Udhas, both are singers, raised under the supervision of parents. Pankaj’s father was a farmer. While his elder brother, Nirmal Udhas earned success after singing as a playback singer for the various Bollywood films. In fact, he was the one who started his career with singing and became popular.

Pankaj Udhas attended Sir BPTI Bhavanagar from where he got his education. Later, he along with his family moved to Mumbai where he studied at St.Xavier’s College. After completing his science degree, he took Indian Classical Vocal Music training in Mumbai from Master Navrang.

Career

In 1980, Pankaj Udhas began his career with a release of a ghazal- first album titled Aahat.  And later, released many hit ghazals, such as; “Mukarar” in 1981, “Tarranum” in 1982, while “Mehfil” was released in 1993.

In 1984, the veteran singer also has sung LIVE at Royal Albert Hall. In 1985, he released another ghazal album named “Nayaab”, while “Aafreen” in 1986. Afterward, he earned huge success as a ghazal singer, and then he invited t sing for the Mahesh Bhatt’s movie titled “Naam”. It was the time when Pankaj Udhas rose to fame with the success of Mahesh Bhatt’s movie “Naam” in which he sang “Chitti Ayi Hai”. This song became hit. Since then, he worked as a playback singer for many Bollywood films and attended LIVE concerts where he enthralled the millions of people with his magical voice.

Among his other popular ghazal albums, “Nasha”, “Legend”, “Kaif”, “ Khayal”, “Aman”, “Rubayee”, “Teen Mausam”, “Ghoonghat”, “Who Larki Yad Ati Hai” and the list goes on. However, Pankaj Udhas’s ghazal albums are worth sharing and ghazal lovers sing the praise for the all-time-favorite ghazal singer.

In 1990, Pankaj Udhas sang the song “Mahiya Teri Kasam” with another legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar, for the movie “Ghayal”. This song became so popular.

In 1994, he sang a beautiful song “Na Kajre Ki Dhaar” film (Mohra), features Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, Sunil Shetty, the veteran actor, Naseeruddin Shah and other played significant roles. Pankaj Udhas sang this song with another popular name in the field of music, Sadhana Sargam. This song became popular and loved by everyone.

Not only this but besides, working as a playback singer, he also gave an appearance in the films as a ghazal singer, such as; “Saajan”, “Naam”, “Yeh Dillagi” and others.

Likewise, he contributed a lot and released melodious ghazal albums to enchant his fans and ghazal lovers.

Interestingly, he earned a lot of awards and honors for making his own identity in the field of music. In 1990, he was awarded for positive leadership and distinguish services provided to the nation. The award was presented by Indian Junior Chambers at Oustanding Young Persons’ Awards show. Also, he was awarded the Best Ghazal Singer of the year and received the K.L Saigal Award in 1985. Likewise, he has earned various awards throughout his career that added more grace to his success.

Achievements

In 2006, Pankaj Udhas got an award for the famous Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award. Also, he was honored with the Honorary Citizenship of Lubbock Texas, USA in 1994.
