8 Things You Didn’t Know About Om Puri

1- Before Joining the Industry

Om Puri was born and grew up in Ambala, India and comes from a Punjabi family. Before joining the industry, he used to work in a tea stall. After a year, he left the work and started working at a Dhaba where he worked for few years.

2- Joined NSD

In 1973, the actor discovered his interest in acting and joined the National School of Drama where he did acting course. In NSD, he met his classmate Naseeruddin Shah and they became good friends. And later, they joined the Film and Television Insitute of India, located in Pune.

3- Faced Rejections

Like many other celebrities, Om Puri also faced several challenges in the begining of his career and faced many rejections.Even Film and Television Insitutute of India almost rejected him as he did not look like a hero nor like a villain, nor a comedian.

4- He & David Dhawan

Om Puri and David Dhawan were roommates at Film and Television Institute of India where they became good friends. While initially, Dhawan thought to change the room as he found Puri humourless.

5- Marathi Film (Debut)

In 1976, the veteran actor made an appearance in the Marathi film industry and debut through a film named ‘Ghashiram Kotwal’ for which he got appreciated and since then, he never looked back.

6- Art House

The actor, Om Puri joined the line along with Amrish Puri, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Naseeruddin Shah who took the start of the art house and made brilliant performances in art movies in Bollywood which becme instant hit.

7- Om Puri saved Naseeruddin Shah’s Life

Once Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah had lunch together at a restaurant in Khar when one of the Shah’s batch mates, Jaspal came and stabbed him. At that time, Puri saved Shah’s life and stopped Jaspal to attack on him.

8- As a Teacher

Many of us don’t know that Om Puri had worked as a teacher too. He taught at an actor school whihc was located in Mumbai where he taught Anil Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Mazhar Khan, Madan Jain, and Surinder Pal.
